Institut St Loup's second project this autumn - SYNAESTHESIC TRANSLATIONS - can now be viewed on this page.
IN COLLABORATION WITH ARTIST THEODORA PAPAZOGLOU THE FOLLOWING PAINTINGS HAVE BEEN SYNAESTHESICALLY TRANSLATED FROM VISUAL TO OLFACTORY FORMAT: TO VIEW IMAGES AND 'THEArt beyond Sight' PROJECT VISIT http://theartbeyondsight.blogspot.com/
'Having been approached about this project by the Uk Synaesthesia Association at the end of September this year I decided to attempt a translation for these images from visual to olfactory. I had just completed 'moebis strip' at the greyarea gallery in Brighton in which I had represented odours in conjunction with my own images, it was a good time to experiment further with these methods. The odours in 'moebius strip' were fleeting and completely murged with the images - after discussion with Theodora Papazoglou who was working on the representation of images both tactile and auditory format it was decided that I would try to isolate my synaesthesic reactions to five paintings, untill then unknown to me, and recreate the experience in the form of five bottled perfumes.I had quite a quick reaction to the images, immediately I knew what they smelled like, so next it was a question of capturing that particular smell. I worked with an unorthadox array of ingredients that were incorperated into five fairly simple perfume-alcohol bases, left to 'marinade' and then filtered. It's a very alchemical process - I found myself using ingredients such as french and polish mustard, tobacco, japanese chilli pepper and even 'pastis'. For example for 'Houses in a Dry Landscape' I had a basic representation - arrived at with a pre selected 'base colour' mixed with particular essential oils - but the smell was still very smooth and two dimensional - it was only when I caught a whiff of an old mustard jar that I realised that the 'pointilist nature' of the image combined with it's yellow, pink and yellow colouring corresponded exactly to the smell of a well known make of Djon mustard...and it had to be that particular mustard, I experimented with a smooth djon mustard and a polish 'grill mustard' - but the texture of those odours was all wrong'
The perfumes will be on display at a two day 'ARTBeyond sight' event organised by Theodora Papazoglou at The Tactile Museum in Athens - 28th - 29th October 2007. The perfumes will be displayed in London at the beginning of December - venue and dates to be announced.
